What is an API key and where do I get one?
An API key is a credential that lets the app communicate with AI services. You can get one from OpenAI or Google AI Studio. Both providers offer documentation to help you get started, and Google Gemini offers a generous free tier.
How much does it cost to use the app?
The app is free to download with 16 included practice scenarios. AI usage costs are paid directly to your chosen provider through your API key. Google Gemini costs approximately $0.03/minute, while OpenAI costs approximately $0.30/minute. You only pay for the time you actively use.
Is my data private and secure?
Yes. The app uses a privacy-first, BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) architecture. Your conversations go directly from your device to the AI provider — there are no intermediary servers. Your API keys are stored in your device's secure Keychain, and all learning data stays on your device. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Which languages are supported?
The app supports 13 languages: English, Spanish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Russian, Japanese, German, Thai, and Vietnamese. All languages are available for both translation and tutoring modes.
What's the difference between OpenAI and Gemini?
Both providers offer excellent quality. OpenAI (GPT-4o Mini Realtime) generally has the fastest response times and no session limits, but costs more (~$0.30/min). Google Gemini (2.5 Flash) is about 10x cheaper (~$0.03/min) with a generous free tier, but sessions are limited to 15 minutes. You can switch between providers anytime.
Can I export my flashcards?
Yes! The app includes a built-in export feature that creates Anki-compatible flashcard decks from your learned vocabulary. You can share these decks and import them into Anki or other spaced-repetition apps for continued practice.
The app isn't translating / I'm getting errors
First, check that your API key is correctly entered in Settings and that it has sufficient credit/balance. For OpenAI, make sure your key has Realtime API access enabled. For Gemini, ensure you're using a key from Google AI Studio. If issues persist, try switching providers in the app settings, or contact us for help.
